Bearing Maintenance! Why is it important?

Updated: Aug 14

Bearing maintenance on your RV is critical for safety, performance, and preventing costly damage. Here's why it's so important:

Prevents Wheel Failure

Wheel bearings allow the wheels to spin freely with minimal friction. If they dry out, overheat, or seize, it can lead to:

  • Wheel lock-up or detachment

  • Axle or spindle damage

  • Catastrophic accidents, especially at highway speeds

Reduces Wear and Tear

Properly lubricated bearings minimize friction and wear. Neglecting them leads to:

  • Premature wear of hubs and axles

  • More frequent (and expensive) repairs

Improves Fuel Efficiency

Friction from poorly maintained bearings makes your RV work harder to move, reducing fuel economy.

Ensures Smooth Towing

Bad bearings can cause:

  • Vibration

  • Uneven tire wear

  • Noise (grinding, humming)

Compliance with Manufacturer Requirements

Regular bearing inspections and repacking (usually every 10,000–12,000 miles or annually) are recommended by most RV and trailer manufacturers. Skipping them can void warranties.

This is not supposed to look like this. Avoid having over greased bearing which can blow seal and get grease all over your backing plates and hub's.
